Opportunities in the Stites Lab

  • The lab has opportunities for individuals who have already completed a successful postdoctoral research experience and who desire to remain in academia. The Yale School of Medicine Research Ranks Faculty Track may be an excellent option for such an individual.

Within the Stites Lab, this position would primarily focus on performing high-quality research (computational, experimental, or theoretical). If desired, one could additionally pursue related non-research experiences that may help with a transition to an independent, tenure-track, faculty position, such as leading and supervising junior lab members, or grant writing.

Requirements for this position include: a history of significant research accomplishments; technical excellence with, and a sophisticated understanding of, ones research methods; a strong passion for research; and subject matter expertise that aligns well with the laboratory’s research interests.

  • Nobody pursues a PhD with the long-term career goal of becoming a postdoc. Rather, a PhD is pursued because one desires the career that comes after completing a postdoc.

A traditional postdoctoral position (approximately 3-5 years) should be pursued when one believes the additional skills, research experiences, and productivity will better help them achieve and maximize their long-term goals. Those long-term goals may be in academia or in industry. The lab’s previous postdocs obtained excellent positions in industry and in academia after working in the lab.

Traditional postdoctoral opportunities are available for highly motivated individuals who have successfully completed a PhD, who have a passion for research, who have strong technical expertise, who are eager to further their scientific development, and who would like to perform innovative, rigorous, and high-quality research.

Opportunities are available for individuals with experimental backgrounds, with computational or mathematical backgrounds, or with interdisciplinary backgrounds.

Recent PhD graduates with backgrounds in physics, engineering, mathematics, and computer science who would like to obtain positions in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries may benefit from a traditional postdoctoral fellowship where they apply their computational and mathematical talents to research problems in areas of biology that are clinically and translationally relevant.

  • Nobody pursues a PhD with the long-term career goal of becoming a postdoc. Rather, a PhD is pursued because one desires the career that comes after completing a postdoc.

The lab is happy to work with PhD scientists who are looking for a shorter-term (~1-2 yr) postdoctoral research experience, whether due to a desire to strengthen a specific skill (i.e., to strengthen computational skills), to gain experience that allows one to pivot to a new area, and/or when other factors make a short-term postdoc the best option.

From the lab’s point of view, it can be highly rewarding to work with such scientists. Short-term post-docs can bring their knowledge and experience to the lab to help advance a project. The details of such a position are worked out on a case-by-case basis where the goal is to find a short-term research project that benefits both the short-term postdoc and the lab.

  • The lab is affiliated with Yale Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) combined program. The lab is specifically affiliated with two BBS tracks: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CBB) and Translational Molecular Medicine, Pharmacology, and Physiology (TMMPP). The lab is also affiliated with Yale’s Integrated Program in Physical and Engineering Biology (PEB).

Computational and/or experimental rotation projects are available for Yale graduate students to explore the laboratory as a potential match for extended graduate school research training.

Potentially interested graduate students are encouraged to chat with Ed about possible opportunities.

  • One and two year positions are available for recent college graduates who are looking for an intensive research experience before applying to PhD or combined MD, PhD programs, and who are eager to develop as scientists capable of making meaningful contributions to the lab’s research programs.

Previous experience in a research laboratory (e.g., as an undergraduate) or previous full-time employment is strongly preferred.

Experimental, computational, mathematical, and/or interdisciplinary research projects are available.

  • Research opportunities are available for mathematically and/or computationally sophisticated undergraduates who are enthusiastic about trying to discover new knowledge through mathematics or computation.
